Cassiopeia A: Supernova Remnant

(click image for largest version available)

I have created an animation that blinks between this image and an older version I obtained from Kitt Peak National Observatory (courtesy of Doug Matthews and NOAO). Five years of time elapsed between the old image and the new version shown above. Although there are differences in the images due to how each was processed, the expansion of the nebula is readily visible by comparing features to foreground/background stars. Needless to say, the remnant of this supernova explosion continue to expand rapidly! Adam Block
